Ok so yesterday my friend told me I had a “straight aura” to me. I came out to her as bi a few months ago and she really supported me in that and I really appreciated it. But now she’s convinced I’m actually straight.

A few weeks ago I went to a Pride Club Meeting for the first time. I’d just gotten the guts to do it. I introduced myself a bisexual. Later in the meeting I was called “another questioning lesbian”.

Stop discrediting bisexuals. Stop telling us we’re straights looking for attention or gays to unsure to come out “completely”. Stop telling me I’m wrong about my own sexuality, when it has taken me years to become comfortable with it and accept it.

I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.

I’m all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but they’re on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduate…what?

They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. They’ve been told they can always be doing something, and they don’t know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because there’s nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but can’t force themselves to sit long enough for it.

Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.

Like, these kids don’t know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said “Probably sleeping, mostly,” and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.

“No, you don’t understand. I plan on sleeping. I’m booked.”

“But you could–”

“Nah. I’m just gonna rest.”

It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesn’t feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.

Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.

Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.

If you’re running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.

kids are not fucking stupid. kids are, on some level, aware of the concepts of attraction and sexuality, even if they cant label it.

in sixth grade (before i came out as trans so i was still presenting as a girl) i had a teacher who was a pedophile. he never Did Anything, but ask any fucking girl who was in his class and youll get the same story.

all of the things he did could be interpreted as things a really enthusiastic teacher does, but we knew, because we could feel it. he had a certain air around him with everything he did. he gave off this aura of being a predator, even though he probably didnt see it that way. but he talked to us like we were equals, or peers, instead of us being 11-12 year old girls and him being a 40+ year old man. he would compliment us on our hair or our clothes and would actively try and find out our interests so he could talk to us about them. nothing inherently bad, in some cases can actually be nice gestures, but we fucking knew, because we felt it in every fucking word he said to us and every time he looked in our direction.

and so each fucking year until we got out of middle school and there would be a new batch of 6th grade girls we would sit them down and tell them. if we heard a 6th grader was in his class, we warned them.

he never assaulted a student, he never said or did anything sexual to us, but he still made every single girl in his class uncomfortable and lose interest in the subject he was teaching because of his presence. kids are not fucking stupid. kids know you are a pedophile. and it makes them uncomfortable even if they dont know why. if you are attracted to children and do not do everything in your fucking power to avoid being around them you are not anti-contact.

I mean you’ve probably got that impression already but honestly, they are really, really bad. Especially if you like uploading fanfiction to websites like AO3.

At the moment, the way the law is phrased is likely to mean everything you upload in Europe, to any website that allows user-created content, will need to be automatically scanned for copyright violations.

You know YouTube’s automatic content filter? Imagine having that for the entire internet. We already know that copyright trolls exploit YouTube’s system in a bunch of ways, making money off user content they have no actual rights to, and shutting down legitimate user content.

But here’s where it gets worse: Websites that host user-generated content – including fanfiction – will be responsible for putting those filters in place and maintaining them themselves.

This law would in all likelihood require AO3 to implement a system which monitors every single work uploaded in Europe for copyright violations, before they can be shared on the Archive.

We’re talking full-on “robotic censorship regime”, as the Electronic Frontier Federation puts it.

Not only would that be that icky and invasive. Not only would it ignore the complexity of copyright exceptions like Fair Dealing. Not only would it be easy to exploit by copyright trolls. It would also be a massive, massive burden on an organisation staffed entirely by volunteers. The sheer volume of work AO3’s coders, wranglers, and policy and abuse staff take on – for free, in their own time – is already staggering.

And while AO3 is a pretty robust archive, and might miraculously be able to find the resources to comply with this ridiculous law, there are many, many smaller websites out there that would seriously struggle. Other non-profits, libraries, and archives, who would all have to either build automatic content filters from the ground up – or more likely, pay for off-the-shelf “solutions” that are overpriced and ineffective.

The OTW are doing their best to fight this change, and this EFF post also has links to a bunch of ways in which you personally can help lobby against this terrible law.

The European Parliament’s legal committee has just voted (in June 2018) to press forward with the law, but we’ve probably still got until at least early 2019 before the whole Parliament votes on it. The timing is about as good as it gets – the next European Parliament election is expected in May 2019, so our MEPs are going to be worrying about re-election right when we need to put pressure on them (that’s now!).

Europe has managed to reject bad legislation in the past. We can do it again this time. Please do what you can to spread the word or get involved!

European followers: please, please sign the petitions, call/write to your MEPs, everythings that’s necessary. Your voice matters.
